About Nanyin music
Nanyin is an ancient form of southern Chinese music, steeped in more than 1,000 years of history, with its roots in ancient imperial music. Performed on wind and string instruments and sometimes sung in the old Minnan dialect, its elegant, delicate melodies recall a bygone period of graceful living and simple pleasures. Nanyin originates from Fujian province's Quanzhou region and is heard mainly in Chinese operas. It is spread to Singapore and South East Asia in the 19th century.
