The Graduation

I went to attend my son's Graduation Ceremony with my wife with joy on 17th May 2013.

It has been three years since my son took up the studies at Ngee Ann Polytechnic
When he decided to take up the course of Film Sound and Video in 2010, I supported him. I then busy in helping him to apply for a scholarship. He used to attain good results when he was at Primary School. Hence he always received the awards. Although the sum of award is not very great, I encouraged him to accept while my wife was always opposing. My wife thought that the award was for those poor families. But I took it as an encouragement for my son's achievement. While considering the scholarship, I wished that it would not bind my son to certain constrain. Hence we looked into various types of scholarships and finally took up the one offered by the school. I was excited when we attended his Scholarship Award Ceremony that year.

He then went to Beijing with the teacher and classmates for a five-week studies at the Communication University of China between September and October 2010. That was the first time he went overseas without our companions. I gave him a call on the second night when they arrived in Beijing. After that, we communicated through Internet. His mother kept calling almost every night. As they were with the teacher, I prayed for them every night and hoped that my son would learn to live up by himself. On the night they returned to Singapore, we went to airport to receive him. One of his friends got a little trouble with the Custom. He requested us to stay until his friend's parents arrived at the Airport. I was touched to see his comradeship.

I was proud that he had really learned from my teaching. He worked part time very often when he was at Secondary School. He could have some money for buying things he needed or taking a meal with friends. Once he got the money from his hard day work, he gave him half of it. It was a hundred-dollar note. I was touched and excited.

I used to drive him to school. When he started attending Polytechnic, the journey was further away. Since the traffic was always jam when returning from school, it was a burden for me. On the day he turned 18, he went to take up driving at once. He then passed his driving test about seven months later. On that night he fetched me and his girl friend to take supper. It was heavy rain and he drove steadily on the Expressway. I let him drive to school since then.

He requested me earnestly to sponsor him attending a Steadicam Workshop at Genting Highlands, Malaysia in June 2012. He needed US$3,500. His mother did not agree to let him attend. Although I did not have much money, I fully supported him. On the day he returned, he showed me the Certificate with joy. I went to look for a frame and display the Certificate in his room. He received many Certificates of Awards since he was at Primary School. That was the first time he was willingly to display his Certificate. When he is looking for upgrading himself, I have to do my best to support him and help him to achieve his goals. What is the point to give him tons of money when he does not need it? I believe I am right and God will bless me too.

After attending the Graduation ceremony, I went home with my wife. We let my son and his girl friend to have fellowship with their friends. They would be apart soon.

When my son came home that evening, I asked him whether he was happy to know that we were at the Ceremony. He was glad to have us with him. I then reminded him that no family member attended my Graduation Ceremony when I was at YAH Community College in 2008. Family Education is important no matter how old my son is.
