The First Time Using Computer Application

It was in 1982. My Company sent me to a client conducting a study on computerisation.

It was the time when we were playing up the National Computerisation Movement.
There were government departments not fully computerised. With the belief of assisting in the movement, I joined the Company with that great mission.

I have had many years' experience in the computer field then. But I was only an insignificant staff in the Company. Among my colleagues, there were many graduates from overseas universities. Those who worked for the number of years as me, they were either manager, consultant or engineer.

I went to the client's office every day. I studied their daily routine work. After that, I had to study the weekly routine and monthly routine. Some of the staff were hesitate to talk to me during interview. Although I put on a badge showing that I was authorised to understand the procedure of the work, some of them did not speak their mind.

I later talked to those who were more willing to response about their life.
After getting some feedback, I started to tell the staff that there would not be any retrenchment after computerisation. The computer could help them in their work. Those routine calculations would be done by the computer and it was fast. Hence they did not need to work overtime. Although they got overtime allowance, they preferred to go home and see the family early. They enjoyed family value.

Four years later, I was sent to another client's office. I had to change the manual working procedure to computer processing.

When we had completed our computer applications, the users of the clients had to start using the computer system. We faced some obstacles.

Those staff and workers who were affected had to learn how to use the computer system. My two colleagues and I had to be the instructors then. We conducted training classes in both English and Mandarin.

I remembered there was a joke. One of my colleagues conducted the class in Mandarin. When explaining the 「Carriage Return」 key, she used Mandarin saying that "Cart, Come Back". The class was laughing. They did not know where the Cart was.

There was a department supervisor opposing to the computerisation. He was not willing to let his workers to attend the training. I told the "boss" that I would personally conduct the training for those workers. But I did not allow the supervisor to attend the class at the same time.

I did not start the training straight away on that day.
I talked to the workers. I then asked them whether they bought 4D (lottery). The class burst into uproarious laughter. So I said that all of them know about "0" (zero) to "9" (nine).
I asked them again that whether they drink 「Guinness Stout」. Many of them laughed. I then said that they know 「ABC」.

I explained to them that the User Manual of the computer system had all the choices for them. There were "1, 2, 3, 4, 5" as well as "A, B, C, D". It was easy.

After the class, they started to learn using the computer system.
